SSA is registered with the Internal Revenue Service as the official 501-c-6 not-for-profit
organization representing the self storage industry before the U.S. Congress and all federal agencies.
The SSA advocates for the self storage industry at the federal level, at the state level (working with our
affiliated state associations), and at the local level when necessary. The Association fights to have state-of-the-art
lien laws in place, efficient and streamlined lien notification processes, licensing for offering tenant insurance, and
adequate late fees. The SSA fights against the federal government installing self storage monopolies on military bases,
against state and local sales taxes on self storage rents and for reasonable property taxes. The SSA fights for tax reform
that will quickly free up storage space in federal bankruptcy actions, and for reasonable abandoned records management,
disposition and other privacy issues.
SSA Government Relations activities are managed by the SSA President & CEO, SSA General Counsel and the
SSA Vice President of Communications/Government Relations with input from Legislative and Regulatory Advisory
Committee made up of self storage facility operators and public company representatives.
If you would like to serve on the SSA Legislative-Regulatory Advisory Committee, please drop us at note
at firstname.lastname@example.org. The SSA has spent nearly $400,000 on legislative and regulatory actions over the
last three years, including providing some $106,000 in grants to affiliated state associations to fight taxes and improve state lien laws.
A contribution to the SSA Legislative-Regulatory Fund, in any amount, is always welcomed and will be recognized in the SSA Globe monthly magazine.
