Essential v. non-essential: Does my self storage business have to close?

posted on

We have heard from many of you asking whether self storage is considered an essential business in light of recent statewide and local orders to close non-essential businesses. First off, most states have ordered the closure only of a certain set of businesses that commonly attract large gatherings, such as gyms, bars, and sit-down restaurants.

In the states with broader orders, it is impossible to give a simple yes or no answer to whether self storage is essential or non-essential. For example, some state orders, such as the Pennsylvania order, expressly list self storage as essential. Other orders are less direct and should be read carefully to determine whether self storage is covered. Generally speaking, these orders allow self storage businesses to remain open given self storage’s role in the supply chain and its use to store property needed by households and businesses during this crisis. Again, however, each order needs to be read carefully.
